as if someone has put a bed quilt over the amp ? kind of muffled sounding. It just sounded muddy or very dark with any distortion effect. First of all, the stock Celestion is definitely better than the Wharfdale, which is a bit nasal, and definitely thinner.I will spend a day tweaking stupid things i have just remembered, like setting the out put of the HD500 from studio to Amp.

Overall, let me say that the Custom series is a large improvement over the Custom Classic models. Have you tried messing with the 2 switches in the rear panel (output bias and smoothing)? That may partially help. You may want to try some 5751s in the pre-amp, usually NOS Jan GE's deliver a tighter tone with good headroom and less gain (thus, maybe, less "fizz"). I'd try the bright cap mod, and re-tube the amp if it actually has the crappy stock Chinese tubes. Anybody have any experience with these & Voxes?

I have heard good things about Boss Blues Driver & MXR Distortion +. I guess these might fall in the same catagory. I have tried an 80's Rat pedal, a Boss Super Feedbacker & Distortion, a Sparkledrive, a Deviever Shoegaze pedal, & a Heavy Deavy Skull Fuzz pedal. I played the other night plugged up into the amp (top boost channel) with just a delay.

It seems like all I ever hear about anymore is musician's getting their gear stolen at shows. I am just extremely nervous about gigging with an amp that is that old. I may just get rid of the Vox & fix the Fender. I have a 60's Fender Super Reverb amp but it needs new tubes & a "tune up". May not want to sink in the extra money when I may ultimatly get rid of the amp.Ĥ & 5. Alnico blues would be awesome but expensive & I am already iffy about the amp. Not sure about spending the money on a speaker swap.

I have heard of the bright cap mod but haven't tried it. I have tried cranking the master & adjusting the channel volume & cranking the channel volume & adjusting the master.ģ. Anybody have any experience with these & Voxes?Ģ. epic fail? then sell your Vox and look for a silverface Fender Twin Reverb (or an Hiwatt head w/ 4x12" cab). no good again? then sell your CC2 and look for a C2X (Alnico speaker, improved tone and circuit over your version)ĥ. any good? no? then do the bright-cap mod and consider a speaker swap (more efficient, powerful speakers should help)Ĥ. crank the master volume and adjust volume to taste (I'd keep it just on the verge of breakup and use an OD/dist to push it more - more vol than gain by the pedal will help)ģ. check the tubes, swap the stock ones with Tungsol (pre) and JJ (power)Ģ.

Versatility wise, with an AC30 you can go from a beautiful and detailed British semi-clean to full-bore rawk, so I think you'd better give it some more time.ġ. Mid-scooped pedals (just like the Boss HM-2 used by Adam Franklin back in the days) are generally not a good match for these amps, but YMMV. A Rat pedal should sound fine, as well as Tonebenders and Rangemasters.ĭon't expect do have a good muff sound out of a Vox (IMHO). In any case, if you tend to rely heavily on pedals for dirt, a Vox might not be the best solution. A cheap reversible mod worth investigating. Essentially one capacitor clipped (near signal input) makes that amp takes pedals A LOT better. 0xeneye wrote:There is some discussion on other boards about the "bright cap mod" on your Vox AC30CC2.
